OUR ETHICAL POLICY
THE MATERIALS WE USE
We are passionate about making products that have longevity and minimalise waste at every opportunity. During the design and making process of our boxes we have tried to reduce our environmental impact through the selection of materials, manufacturing methods and packaging.
We currently use the small hardwood off-cuts from local furniture makers, which would usually be discarded, to make our boxes in small batches in-order to reduce the use of new material and waste. The collective 'Brickyard' barns, of which our workshop is one is mostly run on solar energy from the many solar panels positioned on our barn roofs and around the site.
Our local supplier is committed to sustainable procurement and they hold chain of custody certification to that end. They source materials from recognised agents and mills with equal commitment to the environment. FSC 100% Plywood: Plywood with this label contains wood that is entirely recyclable and from FSC-certified and managed forests. FSC MIX Plywood: Plywood with this label is the most commonly seen. It means there is non-FSC certified wood used in the plywood.
Wood veneer is a more eco-friendly option compared to solid wood. Reduced waste is one of the main environmental benefits, as wood veneer is made from thinly sliced layers of the tree, compared to solid. This allows for maximum yield from the tree and much less waste compared to solid wood. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) also agree that veneers make better use of raw materials, as a single tree can produce thousands of square metres of wood surface.
